Musical Theatre

Musical theatre presents a unique and exhilarating challenge for a photographer — a form that combines the emotional intensity of dramatic performance with the physicality of dance and the energy of live music, often simultaneously. For Mattia, that complexity is what makes it so compelling to shoot. A great musical theatre photograph must hold all of it at once — the expression on a performer’s face mid-song, the precision of a choreographed sequence, the spectacle of an ensemble at full tilt. As a trained actor and theatre director, he understands the architecture of a scene and knows where the defining moments are likely to live. His aim is to produce images that capture the ambition of the work and do justice to the extraordinary range of skills that musical theatre demands of its performers.
